mathematics student and teacherThe Mathematics Faculty of Kogarah High School prides itself on providing opportunity for all students to achieve academic success in this subject. Many students achieve at the highest level in both the School Certificate and Higher School Certificate examinations. Teachers in the Mathematics Faculty have high expectations of their students, and enjoy seeing each student's success.

Faculty Structure:

Year 7 & 8 students remain in the same class for all subjects. Year 9 & 10 classes are graded by their Mathematics ability. Students in Years 9 & 10 may follow the 5.1, 5.2 or 5.3 (top) course, depending on their class, or their individual program.

In Years 11 & 12, Kogarah High School offers Extension 1, Mathematics (2 unit), General Mathematics (2 unit) & Applied Mathematics (non ATAR). An Extension 2 Mathematics class runs every year in Year 12.

Homework and Assessment:

Students are set homework after each Mathematics lesson. Assessment is ongoing such that students get to demonstrate their understanding of topics over a number of tests, assignments, presentations and major examinations. An emphasis in the classroom is the setting out and presentation of working in each student's bookwork. This is an extremely important aspect in Mathematics. Students need to communicate their understanding of a concept by clearly setting out a solution to each question asked
